Stoner by Definition

For one reason or another, you might have a hard time understanding & contributing to conversations about cannabis.

Whichever way, if you feel it’s time for you to start learning, we’re more than happy to help! Here’s five key pieces of terminology from the world of weed.

  • Weed

To start, we should clarify that weed is the general term used to describe the buds of a cannabis plant. Specifically, it’s reserved for those containing the chemical compound tetrahydrocannabinol, known as THC.

If the buds don’t contain a significant amount of THC in favor of higher cannabidiol, or CBD, content, the term CBD flower will suffice. You can also use the term flower in place of weed.

Also known as tree, pot, green, bud, reefer

  • Stoned

Once you enjoy some weed, whether by smoking it, vaping it, or consuming an edible, which is a piece of food infused with a concentrate derived from flower, you might start feeling funny.

There’s usually nothing wrong with this, of course; it just means you’re stoned! That, of course, means you’re feeling the relaxed, woozy, euphoric, and heady sensations that come with ingesting cannabis. You can also describe this feeling using the term high.

Also known as lit, smacked,

  • Pipe

Speaking of enjoying weed, there are a few ways you can go about it. If you’re smoking flower, for instance, you can take the simple route and buy a pipe

A pipe, simply, is a straightforward smoking device, usually made from glass or silicone featuring a mouthpiece, a connected stem, and a semi-sphere bowl capping it off with one hole in the center and another on the side, known as a carb.

To use the pipe, fill the bowl with ground-up flower, cover the carb with your thumb, and inhale while using your other hand to light the bowl.

Inhale for a few seconds longer afterward if you want a big hit, and for less time if you want a smaller one. When you’re ready to finish taking your hit, uncover the carb, inhale longer so the smoke enters your lungs, and steadily exhale.

Empty the ash from your bowl, if there’s any left, and fill the bowl again when you’re ready.

Also known as piece, one-hitter, glass

  • Bong

Another glass or silicone device you can use to smoke weed, a bong features a wide base to be filled with water, one small stem extending from the side featuring a detachable bowl, and a larger stem extending from the top or side with a mouthpiece at the end.

To use a bong, simply fill the bowl with ground-up weed, and inhale while the bowl is attached to the bong. Once you’re ready to complete your hit, pull the bowl from the smaller side stem and inhale deeply until the smoke enters your lungs, smoothly exhaling afterward.

Empty the ash from the bowl as you would with a pipe, and fill it again when you’re ready for another hit.

  • Joint

Lastly, a joint is similar to a hand-rolled cigarette, except it’s filled with ground-up weed instead of tobacco, and the filter is made with a small piece of folded cardboard, rather than a conventional tobacco filter. There is also a type of joint partially filled with tobacco, but that’s known as a spliff.

The term blunt refers to something similar, but more distinctly refers to a cigarillo with the tobacco filling removed and replaced with flower.

Also known as jay, preroll

There are many more terms we could discuss, but that should help you get started in your journey to understand cannabis!
