Trips With Jane: OG CannaBis Cafe

We went to the OG Cannabis Café, one of a few cannabis lounges cropping up in West Hollywood. Previously home to the Lowell Café, the business relaunched as of this past November and is re-establishing itself as a touchstone in the neighborhood for those of us who are 420 friendly. The location is discrete, tucked on a corner but hidden in plain sight among other businesses and dispensaries. A cross between business casual and trendy, the café has indoor and outdoor seating, an intimate aesthetic, a couple well-placed TVs, a bar and a decent playlist. It felt like a cozy but well curated nook, where you were among friends. For a Friday night, it wasn’t particularly crowded but we did choose the last seating (8:30p), so that could have been a factor. This gave us just enough time to get a full seating, which is usually an hour and a half, but we were able to hang out and vibe longer while enjoying our high. I’d recommend an earlier time; toward the end it felt like we were being nudged out—after around 9:45p the staff started cleaning up and closing down. As per cannabis retail licenses in California, cannabis businesses are on a strict limit to end operations at 10pm. Dress was casual but I’d say look cute, whatever that means for you—there’s no dress code and people seemed to drop in leisurely like you might drop in to any other restaurant. We made a reservation and check in was easy and smooth. Don’t forget your ID!

After being seated for a few minutes, just enough time to be excited and take it in, our server came with menus and broke down how it all worked. Expect to order your cannabis first and this you will pay for with cash. The menu is broken down by brand and offers a variety of pre-roll packs and eighths, as ground flower or small nugs. Don’t forget to check out Dizzies, a brand highlighted via comic panels and artwork throughout the lounge. Their brand specializes in terpene enhanced, flavor rich bud. We ordered the Black Cherry Bomb Pop and with the recommendation of our server, we combined it with some other flower, in our case Helena Farms’ Gelato. It was tasty, reminiscent of Cherry Coke or smoking weed from a cherry flavored wrap. We also ordered a pre-roll pack of Gello Shotz by Helena Farms which was an 8-pack of thin half gram joints. They smoked well, the high felt social and was a nice warm up before our food came out. The strain by Dizzies lent a heavier, stoney feeling to the more light and mellow effects from the other strains that we tried. When you order flower, it’s not required, you’re given all of the tools that you need: rolling tray, matches, a grinder, papers and reusable filters/crutches. Roll up, puff, pass.

As for food, we chose classic munchie go-tos: chicken nachos and asada tacos. The food is not cannabis-infused and there are no alcohol options in the dining room. I didn’t miss it though; there was plenty of weed to go around, get a good high and take some home with you. I wouldn’t turn down an option for an edible for dessert though, just saying. We stuck with water and the food came out fast, right after smoking our first joint. If you want more time to smoke before food, then you may want to hold off on ordering, depending on how busy it is. You get 3 tacos and the nachos were enough for 2 or 3 people. We preferred the nachos and tried our best to juggle our urges to both smoke and eat. Other food options included pasta, salad, sandwiches and couple desserts but we enjoyed what we got. It was perfect to nibble on between talking, smoking & photo ops.

I just couldn’t stop basking in the cool mood lighting and just how relaxed and comfortable the space was. The staff was friendly and attentive but didn’t hover. Overall, a successful trip to our first cannabis lounge. If you’re curious and eager to see what the hype is all about, visit the OG Cannabis Café for a dining experience that will help take the edge off. They even have events like karaoke and meditations.

We’ll definitely be back. Next time, we’re going to brunch!
